Left/Wrong (or, Anything But Right)

[For Day 4 of NaPoWriMo 2013. I just got home from a long day of work and couldn’t think of what to write about. I haven’t seen the writing prompt yet. Anyway, I tried a few other poems before getting here but nothing felt right* and right* can’t be forced. Then I typed the first 4 words here, hesitated, and then this happened. But I don’t know about this one. I just don’t.]

There was a man (there are many
But this one wasn’t like any
He sold his soul then bought it back.
He did some wrong, he got attacked
He switched to right for a day or two
Did some good deeds (then thought it oo
Wanted a wife but couldn’t find
Someone who’d want to leave behind
Her properself and sell her soul
(But that was how they could be whole)
He felt so achingly bereft
Took a few steps, then he turned left…
He wandered, for ever alone,
Gave up good, made bad his own
Made himself a throne o’ flames
Made up all kinds of torturous games
Found people who didn’t want to play
He rolled their dice anyway
He drank their souls and ate their heads
And used their insides to make threads
(For he’s an Emp’ror—one of those
Who always want shiny new clothes.)
It’s quite likely he’s still around.
They’ve looked for him. He won’t be found.
