Fall’n, FallOut

a letter fell
he caught it
a cursive hand
blue ink, aqua
a pen they didn’t own
he read it alone
his face crumpled
like the paper
the words floated
floated into his eyes
into his insides
ambushed his soul
burned ugly shapes
turned his face pale
like the paper
with watery squiggles
turning his world black
like her heart
which once was pink
but that was once
(she entered, he knelt)
once upon a time
we were also in love! he cried.
She said, “Well, shit happens, you know.”
