How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d.
– Alexander Pope
Random, fleeting thoughts:
Sometimes we do wish we could erase people and incidents from our mind, for if they don’t exist in our memories, they don’t exist at all.
Of course, that wouldn’t be enough; those people should forget us too, so they cannot come back, haunt us and, distraught, try to remind our, now spotless, mind of what was and what never will be.
Life would seem a clean slate. We’d never know which prayers went unanswered and which wishes left ungranted.
Happiness? The disquieting kind, I’d imagine.
